Stories from Pearlington: Preface

In November, 2005, JoeB came back from Mississippi and testified to us the truth about the devastation in Mississippi by Katrina. He could have been God speaking, but regrettably as the Apostle Thomas proved, the truth is so unimaginable that it cannot be believed until I see it with my own eyes and touch it with my hands. I can only offer to you my testimony to what I saw and touched in my week in Pearlington with 14 people from Fountain City Presbyterian Church of Knoxville.

The people of Pearlington, MS, many poor and unemployed, are abandoned, if not opposed by county, state and Federal governments. These institutions have left them to fend for themselves seemingly hoping they will fail. Yet these people have persevered by their own determination, by their faith and by the help of churches from all over the United States.

They still need our help, no one else will help them and the FEMA trailers go next February 28, unless someone changes their mind. Please, and yes, I’m begging, I need 5 or 6 of you to give a week’s vacation and your hands to come with me next January or early February when I go back with Fountain City to rebuild homes. We can double our work, not seven homes in seven days, but fourteen. If you have any compassion for your fellow sojourners in this world and you come with us, I warn you beforehand, your life may never be the same. In Christ’s name, we pray for your help. Amen. In the next few newsletters I will share stories of the people we helped.
